packing for new york was no easy task.  factoring in walking for 10 hours a day, as well as extreme heat and humidity really threw a wrench into my usual outfit planning.  i found myself envying those in new york who were wearing make up in the day, shoes with any sort of heel on them, and layers.  how, i still wonder, does one wear more than the bare minimum in 35 degree weather?  i mean really, even with ac…that is impressive!

but what really stuck with me when it came to new york street style, was how much of it there was.  growing up casual west coast, i’m not accustomed to so many stylish people in one city.  don’t get me wrong, vancouver has come leaps and bounds in the last few years, but we are still a very casual culture.  if i wear heels in the day, a hat, or something deemed as “out there” i get the major stares.  and i don’t think it’s right that i’m the odd man out because i’m not wearing jeans and a tee.  there were so many people in nyc rocking awesome personal style that adam and i left our vacation completely inspired; motivated to stay true to who we are and what we want to wear.  i often succumb to the pressure of fitting into the vancouver scene, but after our travels i say bring on the side eye looks!  i think that there’s something incredibly special about seeing someone with a look that is very true to them.  and we all know that when you look good, you feel good!

how about you?  what’s the street style like in your hometown?

i really wanted to write a great blog post to go with these photos.  something about green.  or maybe about how i’m wearing shorts.  perhaps it would be some sort of a great story to make you laugh.  instead, i’ve sat here staring at the screen for an hour.   i ended up just publishing it without content, but i AM on vacation, so can you really blame me?

hope you’ve had a great weekend, can’t wait to tell you all about nyc!

took the plunge and bought a pair of white pants.  for a klutz like myself, this is very risky business.  with these trousers on, i’m pretty much a walking tide-to-go pen ad.  but, it was tons of fun styling them for the latest FASHION magazine style panel question: what is your favourite way to wear a bright lip to correspond with your style?  you can check out my answer here.  in the last year i’ve become addicted to bold lip colour.  my favourite shade is a toss up between a great rouge and bright pink, much like this revlon balm stain.  now, i’ll just have to be sure not to somehow get lipstick on my pants…because i would.

and thanks so much for all your nyc recommendations.  adam and i are going to sit and read through them tonight and sort out our itinerary!  you’re all the best 🙂

marchhhh

I spent this weekend getting up to the usual shenanigans (I almost missed a typo “shenanigangs” just then, but I assure you I am not affiliated with any gangs!) Adam was out of town all weekend and I saw this as an opportunity to go shopping. But let’s be honest with ourselves, I’ll use any excuse to go shopping. You’re going through a break up? Awesome, let’s hit the mall! You gained 10 lbs and none of your clothes fit? I’m so happy for you, we should go find you a whole new wardrobe. Okay, I obviously kid. I’d never actually take you to the mall after a breakup, that’s a recipe for tears in my Orange Juilius.

Where was I? Right, Saturday afternoon. I planned a morning of Main Street shopping with Melissa and then was going to hit downtown before my hair appointment. Why I feel the need to have the most stereotypically girly weekend while my boyfriend is away, I’ll never figure out. Anyways, I kept running into friends and getting so distracted that I forgot to eat! I was literally so lost in a world of spring florals and platform pumps that didn’t eat my first meal until 6 pm on Saturday. Now, if skipping two meals to shop isn’t logical, then I don’t know what is! Thankfully, the last person I ran into was Lisa who was a fabulous shopping partner and the perfect impromptu dinner date! We caught up on important life details and shared funny stories over a drink and some eats.

It was the opposite of my usually structured Saturday afternoons, but that’s what made it so great. Every time I turned the corner there was a new opportunity; those days are the best!

day 16 // let me explain

February 17, 2011

Pre planning my outfits has been the only thing getting me through February, and I had unfortunately only had the first half thought out. Now I’ve fallen a day behind on my challenge due to a severe case of un organization! So let’s all play a little game of pretend and say that this was outfit 16 posted on the 16th shall we? What is that? That’s considered a lie? No no, that’s just the beauty of the world wide web 😉

Now that I’ve sorted out the rest of my outfits, I’m out of my styling rut. Or, “Alicia got her groove back” as I also like to call it. Apologies for the random photo location today. In an act of desperation, I got our website model to switch spots after our photo shoot and take pictures of ME. I’m sure she was more than confused. Thanks again Tass!!!!

Day 10

I’m doing a little happy dance right now because today was Day 10!!! Double digits people…we’re getting pretty serious. The reality is setting in though, there are only a few pieces left that I haven’t worn yet. Soon the repetition starts and the real remixing begins….eeek! This old Graham and Spencer number is one of my favourite dresses. The bubble shape isn’t over done, but rather provides a feminine hourglass silhouette. I added the white jacket at the last minute and I quite like the way it all turned out. Score one for last minute outfit additions!

30 for 30 Banner

Melissa and I caught up over sushi and cupcakes (a weird combo…we know!) Both of us are enjoying the 30 for 30 challenge, but are especially happy about the shopping ban. I think we’re both going to see how long we can go without spending money on clothing even after the 30 days are up. I’m sure I’ll end up shopping in San Fran, but that’s not until the beginning of September. If I didn’t shop until September I’d be absolutely shocked. Hey, is it cheating if you use a gift certificate during a shopping ban?

See new locations from Sex and the City: the Movie

To Enter, simply leave a comment with your email address and which Sex & The City character you think you are most like. For example, I am very much a Carrie. The contest ends Friday May.28th at 10 pm, when the winner will be picked at random and contacted by email.

Good Luck 🙂
