Sweet November

November 1, 2016

alicia fashionista, fall outfit ideas, minimal style for curves, best canadian style blogFall.  Sweet, sweet November.  I really wanted to feel the seasons this year instead of letting them pass me by.  When it seems as though you’ve blinked and tree branches are bare before you’ve had the chance to walk, pumpkin spice latte in hand, enjoying that glorious crunch of leaves beneath your feet, gently breathing in that crisp Autumn air.  My daily outings with Reg have greatly helped me achieve this.  I’ve been in the moment, at least for our hour together, soaking up the beauty of our familiar surroundings.  Even though we’ve had record amounts of rain this month, I don’t feel robbed of this season (though, it has been less leaf crunching and more of a slippery, mushy leaf floor).  Last night, I put a record on, lit a bunch of candles, and had a big glass of red wine.  I said my goodbyes to October by cleaning out the fridge and organizing the pantry, because what else would I be doing in a trick-or-treater-less apartment on Halloween with a dog that’s absolutely terrified of firecrackers/works?  It was like a smoking, movie set war zone out there, poor guy has been on edge for an entire week.  And hey, today the kitchen is spotless!

This particular November, I will be turning 30.  It’s something that feels somewhat final, as I’ve felt so much security in my twenties.  Just another big shift, which has been a reoccurring theme in my life the last few years.  I’m feeling optimistic for this next decade, but already nostalgic for my twenties.  It’s almost a slight identity crisis.  No longer a twenty-something, what will my thirties be all about?  I mean, I’m the kind of person who looks up the ending to a movie I’m watching to see if everyone ends up okay.  If only I could do that for real life too!  As for the big 30th bash, I’m seconds away from booking myself a ticket to New York instead of throwing a big party here.  Wouldn’t that be epic, waking up in NYC on your 30th birthday?  Sounds pretty darn romantic to me!

For those of you asking, this wrap coat that I got from ASOS (which has since sold out) is still available on the New Look website!  Plus, it’s available in a variety of colours.  I got mine in a UK 14 and it’s true to size (I’m normally a North American size 10, which is the equivalent).  Really happy that I found the New Look Light Brown Belted Longline Coat!  I love the neutral but standout colour, the longer length (I’m only 5’4 and 1/2, but it absolutely works), and you can’t beat the price!  Shop the rest of the look below:

vancouver street style, what to wear in vancouver in spring, alicia fashionista, best vancouver style blog

Dressed like a total g-ma and I’m looooving it!  Snagged this gorgeous blouse (you can totes shop a similar one here) right before our London/Ireland trip because I thought it’d be a really pretty staple top to add to the suitcase.  Of course, I forgot to bring it with, because packing for Europe is always the most stressful, but I finally dug it out of the closet and styled it up for a day at the office last week.  It also turn out to be one of the warmest afternoons we’ve had in a long, long time, so that dramatic high neck and gorgeous long sleeves ended up being way too warm.  Uncomfortable warm.  Went home and changed kind of warm.  Isn’t that always the way?!

casual cozy sweaterThere are the days I wake up bright eyed and bushy tailed, and then there are those mornings I hit snooze as many times as possible.  And on those extra exhausted occasions, if there is ever a way for me to wear leggings as pants (in a respectable way, of course) then my goodness, I’ll take it!  This outfit hits maximum levels of comfort and was the perfect ensemble for some cozy fall activities.  Get the links to shop the look below!

I don’t know if you believe in ‘meant to be’, but you must know that fate brought these over the knee boots and I together.  On my quick 48 hour trip to NYC, I popped by Macy’s in a sleep deprived haze and happened to wander up to the shoe floor.  The vastness of the Macy’s on 34th Street is only magnified during sale season.  I aimlessly tried on a few of styles in the clearance section and then finally emerged and continued onto their current displays.  Right there, amongst the INC footwear, I saw these beautiful cognac over the knee boots.  They had the most glorious little sign attached to them: available in wide calf.  This is something I never see here at home.  Thank you, Macy’s and INC for thinking of us gals with calves that don’t fit into the standard boot circumference!  I snapped these beauties up on sale, nonetheless, and proudly wore them out that evening.  I especially adore the OTK silhouette, it’s a little sexier than a below the knee style and even slightly more flattering and comfier.  Anyway, just thought I’d provide you with that tale.  You know, just in case your Tuesday was missing a boot love story.  Hope you’re all having an amazing day xo

My love for the athleisure trend just keeps growing and growing.  I think these Nikes might just be my favourite purchase of last year.  They’re so chic and practical all at the same time, really glad we made the investment.  I say we, because Adam most definitely got matching ones.  Personally, I take my athleisure wear from an active day of errands, straight to the gym or a class.  It’s just crucial for me to be ready to go for my workouts, or trust me – I’ll never do them.  Paired with a blanket scarf, this is also my favourite casual airport attire lately.  In fact, I’ll be wearing this combination with a giant winter coat to YVR tomorrow.  I’m catching a flight to New York City for a really quick, but totally amazing 48 hour trip!  And I cannot express to you how excited I am, especially since the current blizzard situation nearly cancelled things altogether.  If you have any must-see/eat/shop recommendations, definitely let me know, and be sure to keep up with my day to day #AFxNYC adventures on insta @aliciafashionista!

I’m so nostalgic for today.  Oh, that first day back to school; fresh books and pencils, a new outfit, classrooms to be found, friends to be made.  A mix of excitement and anxiety, swirling around in your stomach like a cocktail of nerves.  It meant new beginnings and held so much possibility that it resonates so strongly still to this very moment.
Today is my new years.
It might have been completely grey this morning, raindrops falling down squashing any last signs of summer, but I leapt out of bed with anticipation.  New routines must be formed, to-do lists made, goals to be met, and work to be done.  It’s a new season and a fresh start.
Happy September to you all 🙂

Standing in Secret Location, the coolest retail/restaurant concept store in
Vancouver, I was able to catch a glimpse of THE Man Repeller herself.
Waiting in line to meet her, I contemplated what I’d say to Leandra, the loveable blog
celebrity from NYC.  Surrounded by some of this city’s most fashionable, I
was sure they’d already asked all the great questions.  And I kicked myself
for never taking any journalism courses, as interview skills
would sure come in handy at moments like these. I decided that I’d meet The Man
Repeller with no plan at all, except to just be my weird self.  And so, that’s what I did.  I’m
not even sure what exactly was said, but we did a bit, complete with impressions and
funny voices, had a good laugh, and then took a few photos.

Leandra was exactly how I thought she’d be and even sweeter.  I’m so glad
she came to Vancouver and that I had the honour of meeting her.  Thanks so much
to my dates for the evening Miss Melissa and Style Without Bordersto Secret Location
for having such a great event, and to The Man Repeller for laughing at my jokes!

backwards: my cardigan.  taking closet remixing very seriously, i tried to reinvent this cardi by wearing it backwards and tucking it into my favourite j.crew pencil skirt.  it was actually more comfortable than wearing it closed the right way around, as the buttons normally gape at the front.  a definite must try!

backwards: capitalqcreative.com.  almost a year after starting my social media business, i am finally doing a big website launch on monday.  i’ve been so lucky to gain more clients the old fashioned way, but it’s definitely time to be extra legit with a website.  also, a great excuse to order new business cards.  i LOVE getting new moo cards.

backwards: going to new york in august instead of spetember for NYFW.  it kills me a little that i went a month ago and could have been there right now instead, enjoying FNO NYC, the IFB conference, and the BCBG and herve leger shows.  oh well, hopefully i can make it there in the spring instead!

backwards: the fact that my automatic driver’s side car window no longer rolls down.  who’d of thought that i’d be wishing for manual car windows?  it’s especially awkward at drive-thru’s, parkade ticket booths, and when someone walks up to your car to talk to you.  suppose i’ll have to make a trip to the mechanics soon!

anything backwards in your life lately?
