Living in the Pacific Northwest leaves you no choice but to get used to the rain. It’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be (looks out the window at this dismal day…), but it really is a part of life here. I’ve grown up in/around Vancouver, so I’m fairly well equipped and unfazed by these weather patterns. This did change slightly, when I became a young professional. Back when I was a student, I really didn’t care what I looked like in class. I was probably far more concerned about writing the paper I’d undoubtedly left until the last minute. Nowadays, I have meetings/general adultness to look presentable for. Getting around this city involves taking transit or driving, plus we ALL know that I’ll be stepping out at some point to get a coffee (or two).
Since we’ve established that looking even semi-chic in the rain is quite a challenge, below are a few of my favourite alternatives to the usual rain boots and practical outerwear, plus a tip or two on how to salvage your ootd in the rain!
The basic goal is to make sure your hair and face stay relatively dry. This can only be achieved by hiding as much of your head as possible. Sounds silly, but it honestly is the only way! To hide my hair, I either style it in a loose low bun or tucking it underneath a scarf. The ever versatile blanket scarf is also a great way to stay warm and can easily be hung to dry once you reach your destination. This Diamond Mosaic Scarf in ‘Quarry’ is from Aritzia. The other trick? Go out right now and get yourself a good rain hat! I love a structured felt large brimmed fedora, much like this one. It adds much needed extra coverage underneath your umbrella and helps protect your hair from frizz and your face from melting!
We all know that proper boots are the only way to keep those socks dry and any shred of positivity in tact (there aren’t many things worse than wet socks). I love my Steve Madden Rosamare Boots for everyday, but keep in mind that I do bring a pair of flats to change into once arriving at the office. If the storm is extra punishing, pack a bright lipstick colour. Once you’ve taken off all your soaked layers, switched your shoes, and added a bold lip, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world! Or at least relatively okay to begin your day 🙂

Great tips Alicia!! I’m a big fan of a wide brim hat on a rainy day. And a little bright lipstick never hurt either 😉

I really like your hat. I have been looking for a fedora. I am really into hats lately. ♡♡
