adventures on bowen island

day 27 posing

My first attempts at photos were not the most flattering….

too windy equals cousin it

A scarf was the absolute wrong thing to wear on a ferry. I almost lost it in the wind, as you can tell from the above photo! Adam and I went to Bowen Island on Sunday to visit with his friends who own houses there. It’s such a treat to have free accommodations, especially at a place that is so close and fairly inexpensive to get to. Adam spent most of his childhood on the island, as his family owned a home there for a portion of his life. It made me laugh because as soon as we got there and went down to the beach, all the guys seemed to transform into boys, goofing around like they were 12 again. I think it’s good for the soul to act youthful when you can though, it helps keep you young 🙂

Caribbean Days

I sincerely wish that Caribbean Days meant that I was actually IN the Caribbean!! It was my first time at the North Vancouver event, but what a perfect way to spend a Saturday! There was great live music and performances, although we saw almost everything BUT Caribbean performances. Most importantly there was a large variety of food vendors and the always loved beer garden. I’ll admit it…I had a Palm Bay and got a little tipsy. It was hot, I was dehydrated, and the new strawberry flavoured Palm Bay was far too easy to gulp down! I’m so glad Adam, Jeff, Melissa, and myself were all able to spend the day roasting in the sunshine together!

car free day on the drive – in photos

June 29, 2010
Car free day was over a week ago…so what? If you’ve never been then you’re a silly bear. Watch for more Sunday Car Free Days on Commercial Drive, Main Street, and Kitsilano this summer!!!

This dog is so East Van, he will eff you up! Seriously though, one of my favourite Commercial Drive pups!

A ton of people blowing bubbles that day…very strange yet wonderful!

Had my first Paparazzi moment when I spotted Amanda from “Ready Or Not”. Totally loved that show as a kid, remember Amanda and Busy back in the 90’s?

And yes, I bought a Welcome To East Van Shirt (amongst other things). It lists 3 streets I’ve lived on, so I think I have enough street cred?

A piece of BC History

May 11, 2010
Growing up I always felt left out because my friends had grandparents who were super young and lively. When I was born in ’86, only my Nana was left. It was a tough time for my parents, my dad lost both of his only a few years apart and my mom lost her father while she was pregnant with me. Though my grandma was alive, a big part of her died with my grandpa and the 20ish years that I knew her was basically her downfall. Nana was always old and frail. She slowly gave up all her interests, first it was baking, then sewing, then knitting, then gardening, and soon she did nothing but crosswords and watch Jeopardy. It’s very sad when you think about it, but she once told me that I kept her alive for all those years, which obviously meant a lot.
It’s unfortunate that I didn’t live the way that my friends did with their young grandparents, but if anything I think it makes me far more curious about who my grandparents were.

This is when my grandparents had just arrived in Vancouver (I think 1947?) Apparently a lot of people have this same photo because someone was taking and selling street photographs.

I love this picnic photo!

Ahh yes, the terrifying bear rug. My grandpa donated it to a museum and my mom swears she saw it once in Chilliwack

Proud parents in Kamloops 1951 with their first son, Vince

Another photo that I adore

Valleyview, 1951

The legend is that they were so isolated in Kamloops, that Vince started to bark before he started to talk, since his only friend was a dog.
Thought this BC sign was super cool!
