Why You Need Flytographer On Your Next Vacation

July 5, 2016

positano photographer, flytographer review, guide to honeymoon in italy, alicia fashionista, best canadian travel blog

Have I told you guys about my sunset anxiety?  I’m sure it applies to sunrise as well, but I never seem to be awake for those.  Anyway, I’m referring to how, instead of simply enjoying the natural beauty of a sunset, I get distressed about capturing THE perfect sunset moment.  You know the one, when things are centred just right and there’s the ideal amount of cotton candy skies with a couple scattered clouds.  It’s so stressful though, because the lighting and colours change so rapidly, that I’m left with like a hundred photos of the same thing, all the while, I’ve missed taking the view in.  I don’t know why, but sunsets turn me into a bit of a photo monster.  It’s not my finest quality, we can all agree on that!  I share this, because I experience what I call “the sunset effect” on vacation.

As relaxed as I am on my trips, I always have this lingering thought in the back of my head about the need for high quality photos.  Not of the scenery, I love capturing that myself.  It’s always a worry about getting a great photo of the people I’m travelling with!  iPhone selfies just won’t cut it in one of my photo books, and the dreaded stranger ask somehow always ends up with no background scenery, feet cut off, or some other boggling photo fail.  All of this changed a few years ago on our family trip to Kauai.  I hired a local photographer to come meet us for half an hour to take some family photos.  Not only was it really fun, but I was actually able to relax the entire trip about photos knowing that a professional would be taking care of that.  We have the most beautiful memories of our trip from that shoot, and it was such a lovely gift idea for my parent’s 30th wedding anniversary!

So, this brings us to Flytographer.  This brilliant company facilitates these exact types of shoots all over the world!  They act as a photo concierge and pair you up with the local photographer of your choice from their roster.  You select the location (or ask for suggestions, like we did) and guide the general feel for the shoot.  The Flytographer team is so amazing, we even had to deal with a last minute crisis with our original photographer and they were able to arrange for someone else at the last minute (thanks, Roberta)!  We got our photos back within a WEEK and the price was extremely reasonable, especially for such high quality pics.  Enough talking about them though, take a peek at some of my favourites from our Flytographer experience below! Images by the talented Roberta Perrone on our honeymoon in Positano.  Really wishing I could snap my fingers and be back on the Amalfi Coast right about now!

Ireland Travel Diary

May 27, 2016

ireland travel diary, where to go in ireland, how to see ireland in 6 days, alicia fashionista, canadian travel blogger

This January was a pivotal moment in my life.  I switched gears to take this blog on full time.  I’ve been working really hard to make my mental and physical health a priority.  I also decided to say ‘YES’ to as many new and exciting opportunities as possible, with a big focus on travel.  I just so happen to also be turning 30 this year.  Which, isn’t meant to be seen as a negative thing, I’m quite excited to enter a new decade.  No, it’s more that I wanted to really end my twenties with a BANG!  I keep chasing that bright light that travel sparks inside of me.  I want to look back at this time in my life and smile because I really LIVED it.  What a rare and beautiful path to be on at the moment, I want to make sure I am making the most of every single second of it!

That brings us to Ireland.  Alex had raved about it and it was a perfect pairing with our London trip.  We played around with dates and settled on a 6 day Ireland adventure.  We squeezed in as much as possible including Dublin, a fabulous stay in Galway, a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher, a lovely visit in Cork, and a Paddywagon Tour to Dingle.  I think back to it all and just can’t believe we were there.  That I was able to see bits of such a glorious part of the earth with my very own eyes!

We arrived in Dublin on a Monday morning and Alex‘s friend Amanda met us at the Gibson.  The second we opened that door and she came barrelling in for a big hug, I knew right away that we’d be fast friends.  The three of us travelled incredibly well together, the triple A trio just worked.  Luckily for us, Amanda has lived in Ireland for over 5 years and was the perfect tour guide.  I’ve never eaten so well!  She’s a vegetarian too, which was a huge bonus, and she knew where all the best food was!

I’ll have a detailed itinerary and recommendations up soon, but for now I wanted to share a little video of our adventures and my brief thoughts on each location below.  Enjoy!

Am I a VLOGGER now?

May 24, 2016

austinvlog3

Just kidding. I’ve only ever made 3 video blogs.  The title stems from my attempts at a little something called “consistency” and “keeping a schedule” and “gaining some control over my content”. I love creating videos and now every Tuesday, I will be posting a VLOG for your viewing pleasures!  It’s just too much fun not to continue doing!

This latest VLOG episode is from our last 2 days in Austin, Texas.  I may or may not have convinced Adam that we need to make the 3 hour round-trip drive to Waco, because my obsession with Fixer Upper reached peak levels.  Check it out for yourself below, and don’t forget to give the thumbs up/subscribe!

Our Very First Vlog!

May 9, 2016

AHH!  So, I’ve been shopping around for a new camera for months because my Nikon D5100 has seen much better days.  I was also considering switching to a Canon because my friends Alex and Jill both have 6d’s and the photo quality is superb.  But, after a ton of research, I decided that the Canon 70d might be the best option for me, as I have REALLY been wanting to do more videos/vlogs and the auto focus is unmatched.  The DAY before we left for Austin, I went into Best Buy with complete determination and I tell ya, I left that place with a brand new camera and not one, but TWO lenses, all for less than I’d been willing to pay.  Shopping around for months was definitely worth while!  I’ve made the big switch to Canon and I couldn’t be happier.  Nerding out over new camera equipment means that this brings us to our very first video blog!  We’re really nervous/excited to be sharing some of our trip with you and really hope you enjoy it.  Be sure to subscribe to my channel, there will be a new vlog up soon!

Taj 51 Buckingham Gate

May 6, 2016

alicia fashionista, where to stay in london, taj 51 buckingham gate review, best canadian travel blog

At the end of our London/Ireland adventure in Feb, Alex and I had two and a half more days to spend in London before flying back home.  I know, the best, right?!  So, we caught the 6 am flight form Cork to an airport in the city that neither of us had even heard of.  It was my very first Ryanair experience, and quite honestly, hopefully my last.  I was actually thankful for the unnaturally early flight time, as we were able to just glide through the experience in a zombie-like state.  We took the tube back to Natasha’s place (Alex’s lovely sister) because she was kind enough to let us each store our large suitcases there.  We grabbed a quick breakfast and made our way to our last hotel, Taj 51 Buckingham Gate.  So there we are, completely disheveled, and our car pulls up to THE most glorious courtyard.  I knew right away that this wasn’t going to be your average London stay.

London, Baby!

April 22, 2016

notting hill, london street style, alicia fashionista, london in february, what to pack for london

It started as a crazy idea.  Half empty coffee cups, pens, and notepads strewn across the table, Alex and I faced each other, that familiar glow of the Mac computer screen illuminating our faces, as we brainstormed our 2016 collaboration plans.  The concept was a once in a lifetime trip to London and possibly Ireland.  I doubted that it would happen, but the idea made my heart flutter in excitement.  We spent a month working endlessly in secret, doing everything we could to make this crazy notion a reality.  There were so many moving parts, down to us frantically sending emails at midnight from the Vancouver airport in hopes that we’d be able to find accommodation once we landed (huge shoutout to Natasha for taking us in and letting us store our luggage at your place, you’re the best). I’d NEVER travelled with such a spontaneous, unstructured attitude, but it was incredible.  It magnifies that travel rush and gives you the overwhelming sense of being alive.  We were able to work on campaigns with both Ted Baker and SHOEme.ca. We had high tea, visited friends and family, ate amazing food, drank more tea and wine and bubbly, and even vodka soda.  We experienced the ultimate luxury at Taj51 and the preferred life at The Mandeville. We spoke in horrible English accents and battled the cold February wind.  We explored new neighbourhoods, got lost, tried new restaurants, acted like tourists, and had an absolutely memorable trip.  Stay tuned for our favourite bites and sights, but for now, feast your eyes on the loveliness that is London Town!

what to do in cinque terre, cinque terre travel guide, where to stay in vernazza, where to eat in vernazza, best italy travel blog, airbnb cinque terre, alicia fashionista, best travel blog canada, cinque terre in september, italy travel guideCinque Terre was one of those places that I’d always dreamed of going.  Those iconic pastel colour houses, perched upon cliffs at the ocean’s edge.  It was a non-negotiable on our itinerary and if I regret anything, it’s that we only spent 3 days there.  It was everything I’d ever imagined and more!

Buckingham Palace

March 29, 2016

bp01We packed as much as we could into our last day in London.  Being the ambitious pair that we are, Alex and I were planning on getting up at 7 am to being the day with our final outfit shoot.  I envisioned twirling in front of Buckingham Palace just after sunrise and before the hoards of tourists arrived. Except that, very typically us, we barely made it out of the hotel before 11 am and arrived to a palace surrounded by hundreds of people.  Our delayed start time meant that we arrived at BP right as the changing of the guards was set to begin.  Not quite the original plan, but we found a quiet little spot with a great view, that I’m sure you will agree worked out just as well.  We were even able to catch the beginning of the festivities before racing back to change and head over to high tea.
