ARC

April 24, 2017

When Sarah from ARC Apparel reached out to me, I was pretty sure I’d misinterpreted the message.  She mentioned that we’d met years ago through work at a yoga studio nearby and that she’d started this awesome new online store.  The reason behind her email, was to see if I’d be interested in modelling some of her clothing for the site, which I was positive wasn’t actually the case.  I spent a day trying to craft a response that gingerly pointed out that I wear a size 10/large and that maybe she wanted to use someone who was a few sizes smaller?  Her message back to me was lovely and she assured me that ARC carried my sizing and that she’d still love to have me participate.

It wasn’t just a numbers thing that was so incredible (a store that carries my size actually wants to showcase a person who WEARS that size – crazy), but it was also so interesting on a personal career level.  You see, my beginnings within the fashion industry were as a Junior Stylist for a local clothing company.  Though I had many duties within this role, primarily it was to put together/style looks and photograph/edit/post them on the store website.  This, of course, set me up entirely for this weird world of blogging and blossomed my love for styling AND photography.  Back then, the process began tediously with a mannequin and then evolved to sourcing real live women to model.  I adored what I did those years ago and it’s just so funny how full circle life can be, as I was now given the opportunity to relive the good ol’ days, but from other side of the camera!

The Spring Staples I Can’t Live Without

April 21, 2017

sears spring 2017, favourite spring fashion trends

There are so many trends to love this spring, and one that I am completely smitten with, is the bomber jacket.  I’ve admired from afar for quite some time, but I couldn’t quite get on board with a boxy jacket in a shiny fabric or crazy pattern that took over last season.  And though this particular bomber also came in a fun baby pink that screamed Pink Ladies in the best way, it was ultimately the black and blue that won me over.  It’s quite fitted and I especially adore the striped detailing, that is another highlighted spring trend, and pairs perfectly with simple white runners.  The fabric is more of a matte blue and matches so well with all those basic jeans and tees that I have on repeat always.

To create this sporty (I keep thinking it’s something Betty from Riverdale would rock) head-to-toe look, I partnered with Sears Canada to source the hottest spring trends online and right here at my local store!

A Little Bit Boho

April 17, 2017

boho outfit ideas, how to wear boho with curves, alicia fashionista, canadian style blog, mavi jeans outfit

I’ve always had this strange and contradicting personality mix.  Though I can be very outgoing, particular (I like using this instead of ‘control freak’), and kind of type a, I can also be incredibly easygoing, agreeable, and introverted.  And what I’ve noticed lately, is that this ends up shining through in my outfits.  One day I’m in head-to-toe boho inspired neutrals and the next, I’m all pops of colour and bold, unexpected silhouettes.  I suppose that’s the beauty of personal style, though I don’t even want to know what that says about me on days that I’m in leggings and a big sweater, hoping not to run into anyone!

My Travel Style

April 3, 2017

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Samsonite Canada. All opinions are 100% mine.

samsonite carry on, how to pack only a carry on, what to wear on flights, how to make travel easier
I’ve learned many lessons over the years when it comes to comfortable travel.

I was the queen of always overpacking AND over purchasing on trips.  I’d bring impractical bags and always managed to wear the wrong thing on flights.  I’ve dragged broken duffel bags across airports and worst of all, been absolutely freezing cold for an entire transatlantic flight!

Not only are airlines often charging extra for checked bags, there’s an ease and simplicity to travelling light.  Getting ready while abroad becomes so much easier when you’re only armed with your favourite pieces.  It’s great having to maneuver just one bag when you’re doing a lot of moving around on your trip, and especially within in Europe!  There’s often no option of an elevator and an abundance of stairs.

Curious about my must-haves for comfy, but light travel?  Be sure to read on below!

No Brainer

March 29, 2017

And by no-brainer, I just mean that my brain has turned off.  Bye, bye, thinking.  It has been a wonderful thirty years.

The beginning of spring is always strange because I have no idea what to wear for the unpredictable weather, or if it’ll curse all of us if I put my winter coats into storage too early.  I basically rock all black or jeans and a white tee every day.  This is the uniform.  Things went as far as 4 of us gals wearing the same t-shirt and medium wash ‘mom jeans’ at an event last night.  It was ridiculous/kind of basic b awesome.  I just can’t put in too much effort when it rains for 30 days straight, ya know?  Which is what has led us here, to the sneakers I just can’t quit and the last of the coat wearing days.  Plus, a high pony t., because day five hair must be contained.

What’s been your go-to spring look so far?

Statement Activewear

March 16, 2017

My workout wear has almost always been all black.  Which, if you think about it, is a bit strange for a dancer.  We were always about the flashiest, craziest costumes, so I wonder why I never got into bolder attire in class?  It’s a shame really, because now that my dancing ‘career’ is over, I’m finally getting into bolder prints and patterns when it comes to my activewear.  No matter what kind of style, I always want to invest wisely into any sort of statement athletic gear.  The fits and fabrics need to be top notch and unique. Which, is why I’m so excited to introduce you to the new DAUB | ACTIVE collection, a partner of one of my faves, Daub and Design!

WARNING: This post contains a terribly photoshopped background, a curvy woman in a sports bra, and a borrowed pair of runners that I was forced to wear without socks.  All things that may shock and surprise – you’ve been warned.

Faux Sure

March 13, 2017

When it comes to embodying more of this minimalism trend, I do struggle to part with certain pieces.  I have LOVED clearing out our place of clutter and when it came to our kitchen, for example, I have seen a direct correlation between getting rid of excess and actually using our kitchen gadgets because we can see/access them.  Which, I know will be the case with my wardrobe as well, but how does one not go into personal style crisis whilst trying to purge clothing items?  This coat, for instance, was in my donate pile.  I was SURE that I was done with leopard print faux fur.  Of course, I didn’t get rid of it fast enough, saw that leopard print calling my name recently, and have worn it a bunch the past few weeks.  Why is it so challenging to decipher between what you ACTUALLY won’t wear, and what you haven’t worn in a while, but will one day resurface as a must have?  The are the ridiculous questions that I have in life.

March Flare

March 6, 2017

I’d love to be one of those people who takes things in to be tailored, but the truth is, it never ends up happening.  This is my ultimate issue with flared denim.  They require hemming, unless you’re cool wearing stilts for shoes and the risk of breaking an ankle. Made it through the day in very low heels with my flared jeans, but they were annoyingly dragging on the ground the entire time.   It boils down to the fact that flares simply are not for the inherently lazy and that I should probably stick to slimmer denim.

Turns out that exposed ankles and trench coats were slightly premature, as any wardrobe transition toward spring has ben abruptly halted by yes, you guessed it – more snow.  It’s almost sad how unprepared we are for winter here in Vancouver, and perhaps even more pathetic that all we can do is gripe about it.  Our trip to Kauai next month seriously cannot arrive soon enough!

Glass City

February 23, 2017

We’ve had the tiniest glimpse of spring and I’m already reaching for lighter jeans and my favourite tanks.  These sunny warmer days are extra sweet after we’ve had such an extreme winter.  Which, I know pales in comparison to the rest of Canada and much of the States, but the Pacific Northwest isn’t usually hit this hard.  They are calling for snow again tomorrow and my fingers are crossed that the meteorologists are wrong.  I’m throwing a baby shower this weekend and thanks to a series of ironic events, we no longer have snow tires.  I’ve got errands to run, people!   We’ll get snow tires again for next winter and I’m sure we’ll have another 8 year stretch without snow, because the universe is funny like that.
