The Oscars @ Cinema

February 28, 2011
The live Tweeters!
I have often describe myself as half hermit, half party animal. I’m perfectly content staying in and hanging out, but also love to get all dolled up and hit the town…anyone else the same?

For the first time in quite a while I had a rock star-style weekend and most certainly feeling the aftermath today! I was invited to be a Live Tweeter at Cinema‘s Oscar Party last night along with Oliva of Style Struck. We greeted and tweeted (Ha!) every guest that arrived to the party. Then, when our “hard work” was done, we got to relax and watch the show! With Erin Cebula hosting, Oscar themed beverages, a delicious meal, and Holt Renfrew prizes, I’d have to say the evening was a success!

I’m super happy about the big awards last night too, I thought The King’s Speech genuinely deserved Best Picture. And of course, I must include my biggest style inspiration of last night…the darling Miss. Cate Blanchett. Her dress was beautiful and elegant, figure flattering, on trend, and oozing originality/personal style. She absolutely hit it on the mark!

It was great meeting so many great new people, plus a special thank you to Olivia, Jill, and Clio for making the night especially fun. Hope everyone had a great Oscar night as well xo

day 20 // the vintage dress

February 25, 2011
day 20 layers are so necessary
I was Christmas shopping with Adam in December and we’d wandered into True Value Vintage. I had given him STRICT instructions beforehand not to let me shop for myself…no matter what. So naturally, when I tried on this dress and stood in front of the mirror trying to convince him myself that I needed it, he lectured me about not needing another dress. I left the store cranky, slightly bitter that Adam had talked me out of the purchase (even though I told him to do so), and sad that I couldn’t have the dress.
Well, Christmas day I open up one of my gifts from Adam and there it was, my cobalt blue vintage dress. That sneaky little bugger went back to purchase it, even after my toddler-esq pouting and whining. What a sweet guy. I got my mom to hem it for me this week, as it was past my knees in the most unflattering way. I was finally able to wear it for the first time today to work and then to Eco Fashion Week. More about the Nicole Bridger show and EFW another time though.

So, as you can tell from my lack of posts this week things have been pretty crazy. I am unfortunately going to have to end my February Fashion Challenge today instead of carrying on for another week. I have new blog projects on the way, and will definitely always be challenging myself with new and unworn items. Hope you all understand 🙂

day 19 // rumour has it

I had a brilliant idea last year to buy a winter coat with colour. This led me to an over sized purple coat on sale at Winners for half price. Oh look at that. Another item from my fashion challenge that I purchased for its 50% off tag. Hmm…I’m sensing a pattern here!

Point is, I think I’ve worn it twice. Perhaps it’s because I feel like a bit of a grape in it. But, these photos have reminded me why I bought a winter coat with colour in the first place. Who doesn’t want to brighten their most used winter staple? My only other winter coats are off white, I practically blend in with the snow! What is your favourite coloured winter coat? Perhaps I should take your advice and try a different colour next year. Maybe a khaki green?

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I’m slightly behind on posting, I’ll try to catch up asap 🙂

This is ironic, but the entire outfit is from Plum, except for the purple coat from Winners!

day 18.5 // i heart hearts

February 19, 2011
heart shorts day 18
purple grey and black

In the spirit of heart printed shorts, I would like to take a moment to share 5 things I loved about today.

1. The fact that it was still sunny out when I drove home from the office (and the sunshine in general was glorious!)
2. Listening to Radiohead’s ‘King Of Limbs’ a day earlier than expected.
3. Pedestrians who press the crosswalk button just so that cars waiting for the light to change don’t have to wait forever! It’s so considerate and much appreciated by motorists.

4. That I went outside in my pajamas and giant winter coat to go stand in the middle of the road like a crazy lady to get a picture of he magnificent full moon.

5. That I’m doing engagement photos for a lovely couple tomorrow afternoon and then seeing Chelsea Handler with a girlfriend from Calgary!

day 17 // gold sparkles

I call this my Cher Horowitz jacket because any sort of sheer cover up reminds me of her. You know what I’m talking about right? When she’s leaving to go on her date with Christian…

Mel: What the hell is that?
Cher: A Dress
Mel: Says Who?
Cher: Calvin Klein.
Mel: It looks like underwear! Go upstairs and put something over top of it.
Cher: Duh! I was just going to.
And she parades back downstairs with a sheer jacket over her mini dress.

I’ve never worn this VERY jacket (another little number that I “had to have”). The master plan was to wear this during the holidays, but no perfect occasions ever came up? So here I am in the middle of February just trying to figure out how to style it! I’ll tell you one thing I learned, a sheer jacket is NOT winter wear 😉 Today I obviously went for all black with a red lip for a pop of colour. I think next time I’ll try it with a dress? This one is still in experiment phase for sure!

Sponsor Spotlight // Modnique.com

February 18, 2011

The other morning when my inbox was flooded with group coupons, I realized how bored I was with them. I think they’re getting quite repetitive, and am rarely interested in their deal of the day. I’ve decided to turn back to flash sale sites for my shopping addictions needs.

There’s a great new (to me…and maybe you) flash sale site called Modnique.com. They post sales daily that only last for a limited amount of time. There’s always great deals on designer labels, clothing, accessories, shoes, and home decor. And as a poor 24 year old starting her career, it’s through sites like Modnique.com that I am able to ever afford designer labels. If you’re interested in joining, you can sign up here and automatically earn a $5 credit!

Nyla Noor from Modnique.com

If you join today, there’s also an awesome handbag sale from the label Nyla Noor who have been featured in People Style Watch, Nylon, WWD, Shape Magazine, the Huffington post and more. They’ve got awesome basics that are a little higher in price, but worth it for their classic styles and convertible pieces!

It’s just fun to browse their deals each day. I almost broke my shopping ban on Monday when they had a shoe sale. We’re talking $120 boots on sale for $30. Anything that involves the words “shoes” and “sale” makes me weak in the knees. Now that’s romance!

day 16 // let me explain

Pre planning my outfits has been the only thing getting me through February, and I had unfortunately only had the first half thought out. Now I’ve fallen a day behind on my challenge due to a severe case of un organization! So let’s all play a little game of pretend and say that this was outfit 16 posted on the 16th shall we? What is that? That’s considered a lie? No no, that’s just the beauty of the world wide web 😉

Now that I’ve sorted out the rest of my outfits, I’m out of my styling rut. Or, “Alicia got her groove back” as I also like to call it. Apologies for the random photo location today. In an act of desperation, I got our website model to switch spots after our photo shoot and take pictures of ME. I’m sure she was more than confused. Thanks again Tass!!!!

day 15 // a case of the blahs

February 16, 2011

blue flower_edited-1flwr1

I was having an “icky” day today and if it were under normal circumstances, then I would have never taken an outfit photo (shhh don’t tell my blog readers!). I think it’s because I couldn’t find a tank to wear underneath this sheer blouse, so I improvised with a nude coloured spanx tank. Do you know how uncomfortable spanx are? With jeans on? At the office for 8 hours? Yeah, definite case of the outfit blahs.
Do you ever plan an outfit and then end up feeling uncomfortable in it?

I must confess to you that I am scared of coloured tights. Not the same way that I fear heights, flying in planes, snakes, and horror films. My latest fear stems from simply not knowing how to style coloured or patterned tights. Do you dare mix colours or do you stick to matching? Do you pair them with all black? What about footwear? Every time I go to wear them, these questions flood my mind and then I can’t bring myself to wear them out. Today was a big step in the recovery process. It’s time to conquer my fears and paint the town..purple.

So please help!!! How do you style coloured tights?

As of this moment I’m halfway through the challenge and what better way to celebrate than an entire bottle of red wine? I may or may not be drunk blogging and risking a Tuesday hangover.Hope you had a wonderful Valentines Day. A special thanks to Danielle for the delicious red velvet cupcakes and obviously Adam for being so sweet. Lots of love to you all xoxo
