Stuck In Neutral

June 27, 2016

alicia fashionista, vancouver style blog, canadian fashion blogger, can curvy girls wear white jeans, how to wear all whiteWhite denim is my JAM right now!  I used to obsess over having all new outfits to post, but that got so expensive and exhausting.  And really, I think that showing a realistic closet is essential, even if some pieces are gifted.  It’s valuable to display a variety of ways to wear one piece, don’t you think?  Are you cool seeing me remix the same pieces from time to time?

So, on Saturday, I posted these white jeans with more of a nautical look.  I get an instagram comment from this lovely girl Em who I met at a friend’s wedding last month asking for the details.  I tell her that they’re the white ‘Adriana’ ankle length denim from Mavi and she thanks me for the info.  That night, we attended our friend’s housewarming party and I almost wore these jeans, but decided against it since I’d just posted them, and opted for a black jumpsuit instead.  We walk into the party, and there’s Em, in these white jeans just a few hours after we’d spoken!  We had a great laugh about it, she’d gone straight to Mavi after I told her about them and bought her very first pair of white jeans (and got them in the black colour as well, because she’s a woman after my own heart).  It was too funny, you have to love the power of social media!

Summer Nautical

June 25, 2016

curvy style, alicia fashionista, vancouver style blog, canadian fashion blog, how to wear white jeansI know, white skinny jeans are apparently something I wear now?  Lately I’ve felt my most comfortable in some sort of variation of this look, distressed skinnies and a loose, but cute, peplum tank.  Thank goodness for those inexpensive Old Navy tops!  Always love a good ON haul to update the ol’ summer wardrobe, linked to a couple favourites below.

This week was a little bit interesting.  Thursday, I got to spend the entire day on a field trip with Etsy where they took us on a trolley around the city to fun insta worthy places.  There was, of course, a crafternoon activity involved as well!  Then yesterday, I ended up having a huge health day, as I had a colposcopy done in the morning and then went to the dentist for a filling and to be fitted for a new night guard (my stress continues well into my sleep in the form of jaw clenching).  It was exhausting by the evening, to say the least, especially since I ended up having quite an experience at the doctor.  I think I’m going to tell that story in a separate post because there’s a powerful message that must go with it, even if it is TMI.  We must talk about these things, ladies!  Then there was all the crazy news on Thursday night regarding the UK and I lost an earring last night.  This week has just felt kind of heavy, ya know?

On a much happier note, I went on an awesome hike this morning to Quarry Rock in Deep Cove with 2 of my best girl friends.  We’ve deemed it ‘The Summer Of Us’ and planned all sorts of fun local activities over the next few months.  We had a really awesome summer together in 2006 and decided that we’d really make the most of this one together as well.  Like a 10 year reunion of friendship or something.  Should be a blast, our next activity is paddle boarding, which I’ve never tried!  Getting out of that comfort zone, so good for the soul!

Flared Denim

June 20, 2016

how to wear flared denim, curvy average size blogger, alicia fashionista, vancouver fashion blog, canadian style blogger

Happy first day of Summer, my beautiful people!  Instead of travelling as much as I have been for the last 6 months, my plans (at the moment, subject to change of course) are to stick around home this summer.  Thinking lots of beach days, bbq’s, weekend getaways nearby, hikes, and patio drinking!  Things have just been so crazy with the apartment flood and jet setting, I’m kind of looking forward to taking it easy, hanging out nearby and getting loads of work done.  What are your plans this summer?

I spent most of last week at lots of fun events, which a lot of you probably saw on snap. If you aren’t already following me on snapchat, you should: a_fashionista.  I also did a TON of reflection and research for the Alicia Fashionista brand and am feeling really focused and motivated.  My problem is that I’m an idea machine and don’t really know how/where to start everything.  I want to make sure I do things right around here!  If you have any requests for content, let me know in the comments below!  My first order of business is to get you 5 blog posts and a video per week, gotta start putting these “brilliant” ideas to good use!

Basic B

June 15, 2016

alicia fashionista, vancouver fashion blogger, canadian style blogYesterday I wore my non-stretch jeans for the first time since they were washed and oh dear.  No stretch denim equals no chill.  I may or may not have unbuttoned them while driving/almost passed out while sitting through a presentation.  Perhaps I should hold off on the stiff denim and stick to these Mavi Emma boyfriend jeans.  The new slimmer leg is the perfect compromise between a skinny and a bf cut, plus they’re the ultimate in comfort.

I’ve found myself recently struggling with the newest comfortable trends.  From athleisure to baggy tops/dresses, suddenly it’s okay to parade around in your gym shoes and not see your waistline for weeks at a time!  I used to pride my personal style on being slightly dressier than the average person and I find that 85% of the time I’d kind of rather just throw on my little white sneakers instead of my heels.  I can’t decide if it’s the newest trends working against me, the influence of a notoriously casual Pacific Northwest, or the fact that I’m getting older?  Maybe we’ll never know!  For now, I think I’ll just embrace the liberating feeling of hiding my natural figure and bask in the comfort of wearing only oversized pieces.

A Little Bit Country

Okay, I have been dying to show you these pics that Bethany took in Abbotsford.  We absolutely parked where we weren’t supposed to and trespassed on private property for these beautiful views.  I was mostly terrified of a snake popping out of the greenery to say hello/murder us.  No wildlife sightings though, so I’d say it was all worth it!   Really as much as I’m a city girl (who’s afraid of garden snakes), I have a soft spot in my heart for the countryside.  My dream would be to one day have a place in the city as well as a cottage in order to live both lives.  Definitely #goals.

I also wanted to make sure my fellow Canadians knew that for the rest of today and tomorrow until midnight PST, there’s 20% OFF site wide at REVOLVE!  That means you could snag this Lovers + Friends ‘Dream Vacay’ dress on SALE, perhaps these summer fave RAYE heels (that have finally been restocked), or any other full price, sale, or pre-order items!

Wedding Shoes

June 3, 2016

alicia fashionista, vancouver style blog, best canadian fashion blogger, gastown street styleWell, well, well.  Look who has to eat their words.  I can’t believe how organized I felt going into this week and how quickly that crumbled.  The good news is, that I got to spend tons of time with my friends from out of town and shoot a bunch of awesome content with Alex.  The bad news, is that I am immensely behind on work, exercise, and organization.  That elusive idea of ‘balance’ seems to always be floating further and further away.  As soon as I have a moment where I feel my schedule slightly at peace, the pendulum swings so far the other way and there’s no way of catching up to it.  Anyway, living and learning over here.

The real story today is that I actually finally re-wore my wedding shoes!!!  I mean, they cost me an arm and a leg, so it’s about time I dusted them off (just kidding, I still haven’t cleaned them) and let them see the light of day!  Their slingback and relatively low heel really make them a versatile everyday shoe.  They looked perfectly matched to my wedding dress, and yet I also love them paired with Mavi jeans and a more casual look.  Really quite pleased with them!

Pretty Pink Punk

May 30, 2016

alicia fashionista, vancouver style blogger, best canadian fashion blog, average size curvy style, outfit ideas for spring 2016I had a couple people inquire about this dress, so I definitely wanted to make sure that I linked to it here it in today’s post.  I was going to really highlight it and go for more of a garden party theme, but this leather jacket/black boot pairing happened accidentally and I’m digging it.  Love when I don’t overthink things and a style just happens organically!  As you can already imagine, I adore this Tularosa x REVOLVE ‘Gloria’ dress.  Favourite features are the forgiving waistline with a hidden zipper closure.  That did work against me though, as I unknowingly left the side zipper gaping open after trying some clothes on in Austin.  Luckily the sales associate pointed it out to me before I stepped outside with my entire left side showing!  So embarrassing, so classically me.  Anyway, I also love how much room there is in the bust, the hidden buttons don’t gape at all!  The only trouble I have with the hidden button closures are that they’re getting a bit loose and keep coming undone.  I will likely sew the bottom 3 closed to be safe.  Otherwise, this dress is the perfect fit and is even more versatile than I’d originally thought.  I’m such a sucker for a pretty pink frock!

Eyelet Off The Shoulder

May 25, 2016

imagesbybethany-AA0061This off the shoulder trend is just too good!  I am very self conscious about that bubbly bit between my armpit and bust (do you ladies have this problem as well?) and LOVE that an off the shoulder look hides it but remains subtly sexy.  It feels so comfortable to be covered up enough to move freely, but also show off the décolletage!  I have a real soft spot for a cotton eyelet too, so this Tularosa Odessa blouse from REVOLVE has been a real delight.  As for fit, I’d say it’s true to size (I’m wearing a Large) and just an FYI to anyone purchasing an elastic top off the shoulder piece, you do have to pull it down from time to time.  It’s just natural for elastic to ride up and have a bit of a mind of its own!  I paired it with my skinny dark denim, though I also love wearing this top with flared denim for a 70’s look.

Super excited to also be showing you the first few pictures from my day at the Abbotsford Tulip Festival with Alex and Bethany!  If you didn’t catch our adventure that day on snapchat, I’ll have the hilarious recap of our day on the blog soon.  Let’s just say, travel days never seem to go as planned, but the trick is to just pivot and go with it!
