cause time will tell us nothing…i will take a chance on something

Another concert post from me…say whaaat? I know, I know, it’s a contributing factor to my shopping addiction. I wouldn’t want to calculate the amount of money I’ve spent on concerts over my lifetime, it’s more than I’d like to admit…

rain rain go away Okay but first of all, we need to talk about this depressing weather!!What the eff?

I normally love Vancouver rain, but it is JUNE weather Gods, not Novemeber…just in case you were confused for a moment.Vancouver SpecialMy outfit is thanks to the amazing Aritzia tank I snagged the other day. I’ve been hunting for months to find the perfect summer tank that I can tuck into all the high waisted items in my closet. I love the tank so much I went to get it in the mint green as well. When you love a basic piece like that, you have to act on it!
all smiles at The CommodoreWe didn’t make it to the show until the opening band was on their last song. It sounded really good though, I’ll have to research and look into them some time!
my outfit at The Temper TrapThe changes in lighting at The Commodore have been ahhhmazing lately! Two thumbs up from this little shutterbug! The Temper TrapIf you don’t know The Temper Trap, then you should (start out with their first single Sweet Disposition and then take it from there!) They ended their show with Drum Song and Adam and I went crazy dancing and rocking out, it was a blaaaast! They were just fantastic live, I defs recommend 🙂

The Temper TrapAnother video from the concert. I’m telling you though, I am the worst videographer of all time! Seriously, I try to zoom in and it’s just blurry and the sound isn’t the best quality. But if you try realllly hard to listen for it, you will hear his amazing voice above all the background noise. Enjoy!

I know I sounded pretty emo there for a moment, but seriously thank you all for such kind words and well wishes. I thankfully feel much better now and am currently relaxing in bed (my Saturday night…you jealous?)
006new
I am especially pleased to report to you that I have been promoted at work! I started out three years ago as a ‘junior stylist’, a title that I hated because everyone thought I was a hair dresser. Not that there is anything wrong with being a hair stylist, it was just annoying to explain to everyone what I did for work. I am now a part of the marketing team and I think I’ve decided on the title ‘Online Marketing Specialist’. Fancy, right?
007newThe promotion has forced me into full time hours and puts the brakes on my plans to speed through my last ten courses in school. As of right now I am working 36 hours a week at the office, teaching dance 9 hours a week and taking a 3 hour night class. Perhaps that explains my meltdown(s)? I need to delete something for fall…school seems like the best option. Maybe a distance course? That way I can do the work when it is most convenient for me. Sorry…thinking out loud.015newI took my brother shopping today and we spent a bunch of his money. If there’s anything I like more than spending my own money, it’s helping someone else spend theirs. He ended up with plaid chino shorts and grey chino pants from Club Monaco, some basic tees from Old Navy, and a vintage inspired Adidas tee from Plenty. We are going out again soon to hit the boutiques in Gastown and Main Street. He has never been shopping in Vancouver before…can you believe it?

018newLast night was great fun at Venue on Granville Street. I hadn’t been there since it was the old Plaza, where I’d had such a bad experience I swore I’d never be back. But clearly it’s trying to change itself into a cool place for bands to play. Last night was Local Natives who I sooooo l-o-v-e! If you weren’t there I am telling you right now that you missed out, but hope is not lost. They claim that they’ll be back in the fall woot woot!024newThey were awesome live, they sound just as good if not better than their Gorilla Manor album!026new

Last July I wrote a little post about a Miss. Florence Welch that I had discovered and couldn’t stop listening to. Her cd ‘Lungs’ was by far the best cd I heard in 2009, and I recommended her to everyone I knew. I even promoted Florence to strangers (it’s true, one drunk night I got some girl to download 2 songs on her iPhone because she’d never heard of her).
I was a little bit nervous before the show because when I love a cd THAT much, if her performance was mediocre maybe I would never see the cd in the same light.

Florence made us wait anxiously while they set up her stage, which included floral arrangements and a beautiful harp. She finally came out wearing a sexy all black outfit with beaded embellishments and a Cleopatra style headdress.

Honestly, Florence put on the best show of my entire life (and I’ve probably been to 50+ concerts). She has an even better voice than her cd lets on, if that’s even humanly possible. At 23 years old, she looks like she has more performing experience than many of the other artists I’ve seen live. She played most of her Lungs album, and with just the right amount of change to make them exciting all over again. Florence spoke about how she got her hair done in Vancouver and ate some sushi (which I have on a video that I’m too tired to upload right now) and had a lot of crowd involvement. At one point she had all of the Commodore Ballroom jumping up and down dancing around just like her. Then 10 minutes later, when I thought it was impossible she could be any cooler, she went crowd surfing.

I fully admit that I was that annoying girl that sang every single lyric to every single song. My arms were covered in goosebumps the entire performance and I still feel like I can barely describe the experience to you. I had the time of my life!!!

Here is a little taste of the amazingness that is Florence + The Machine, with a video of the end of her song ‘Drumming’. This was one of my favorite moments of the concert because I obviously LOVE this song, but she rocks out at the very end and kills it.

If you ever pass up the opportunity to see Florence perform live, I might have to punch you in the face. And if you don’t know her music yet, then go to YouTube RIGHT now and preview some of her songs. SHE IS THAT GOOD xx

love florence…

photos from lastfm

I first heard Florence & The Machine in a clothing store acutally. She did a cover of ‘Hospital Beds’ which was originally done by Cold War Kids. I loved her voice and went home to find it on iTunes and have been listening to it on repeat ever since. The song is only 2.5 minutes long though and I was on the hunt for more! I discovered that she came out with her first cd a few weeks ago with 22 songs. Lung cost me $11.99 on iTunes, which I was hesitant about but I had gift certificates so I figured what the hell, I’ll just give it a try….ohhhh my God!! This cd is so fantastic, I’ve been telling everyone I know! Her voice is so amazing and she’s super catchy but a little bit dark as well. I’d compare the sound to the newest Yeah Yeah Yeah’s cd, but her slower songs remind me of Imogen Heap.

If you’re hesitant to purchase the entire cd, I’d start off with Dog Days, Kiss With A Fist, and Hurricane Drunk. They are my personal faves so far!

If you do give her a try, let me know what you think xoxo

what I’m listening to..

PART ONE

The Bird and the Bee – The Bird and the Bee

This c.d. is currently on repeat. Okay that’s a lie I don’t actually use a stereo, but if I did that would be true. If you’re a fan of a strong female sound (think Feist meets Jem) then you should definitely try them out! F-cking Boyfriend and Again and Again are sooo catchy!! You may have heard this group in the Sex and the City movie when they did a cover of How Deep Is Your Love.
The Whitest Boy Alive – Dream
Reminds me of being in a good mood on a summer day, which is one of the best feelings ever! This c.d. starts out very strong with Burning and just gets progressively better, if that even seems possible. It’s a feel good disc with great lyrics and captivating beats.

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead – Century Of Self
Their band name is a lot harsher than their sound actually is because trust me I do not listen to any heavy metal hard core rock out stuff (apologies to my Pantera loving friend Morgan!) Their newest album really shows their ability to create an addictive rock sound with clever lyrics and innovative ideas. I can’t wait to see these guys in concert this month!!

Born Ruffians – Red, Yellow, and Blue
I completely took a chance on these guys and was pleasantly surprised. They sound like Wolf Parade meets Vampire Weekend with their own twist. It’s quite poppy for an alternative group but is again a great sound for those warm summer days! Check out Hummingbird and Badonkadonkey (even just because the name of the song is funny)
M83 – Saturdays=Youth
The thing that amazes me about this album is that they actually capture the sound of the 80’s that was our youth (especially in Kim & Jessie). This c.d. is great to put on in the background for a relaxed mood. They were also in the top 10 best c.d.’s of 08 according to Pitchfork Media. Today Adam (who introduced me to them) got us tickets to their concert in May which I know will be an amazing show!
Sun Kil Moon – April
If you’re a fan of Neil Young or any similar talented lyricist then you will adore Mark Kozelek!! He simply has a way of soothing the soul. Not a new c.d. by any means, but if you don’t already listen to him you MUST check him out! This man is so talented that he has a whole c.d. (Tiny Cities) that is Modest Mouse covers in a mellow tone. Also worth a listen!!

My 5 “Desert Island” CDs:

1.Ryan Adams-Love is Hell Part 1
Will I ever get sick of this c.d.??? It’s questionable. Something about this disc makes me love it more every single time I hear it. He has since combined part 1 and 2 onto one c.d. but I’d purchased it back in the day when they were separate and I prefer the first part. ‘I See Monsters’ is the only song worth listening to from part 2.

2.Feist-The Reminder

I don’t even care if it’s a total cliche to love this c.d., but I just do. It’s catchy, smart, and can tug at the heart strings. The song I keep on repeat is ‘Past in Present’ and when I’m taking photos at work, this is always my go-to c.d. It mellows me out but keeps me singing along.

3.Death From Above, 1979-You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine

Everything about this c.d. is pure genius. It’s angry, it’s sexual, and it’s fun, and therefore, I love it. Too bad there will never be a second disc from them 🙁

4.City and Colour-Sometimes

I keep switching this spot between City and Colour and David Gray ‘White Ladder’ but after seeing Dallas Green last night it definitely goes to Mr.Green. I love any good song about heart break and there’s PLENTY of that to go around on this disc. Not to mention that this guy came to Vancouver 3 times on a tour from this c.d. alone, so you know it must be good!!

5.We Are Scientists-With Love and Squalor

Adam actually introduced me to this c.d. and I just love it. Perhaps I like it so much because it reminds me of cruising in my old car with the top down on a sunny day, but either way I am not even close to sick of this c.d. which means it’s pretty damn awesome!

My 5 “Can’t Stop Listening To” CDs:

1.Justice-Crosses

LOVE-LOVE-LOVE it!!! ‘The Party’, ‘DVNO’, and ‘D.A.N.C.E.’ are such good songs that I can’t believe I only recently stumbled upon them while looking for new gym songs. Download them asap, you won’t regret it!

2.Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-Baby 81

This c.d. never lets me down. No matter what mood I’m in, I can put this disc on and it’s the perfect mix to listen to. ‘Lien on Your Dreams’, ‘Weapon of Choice’, and 666 Conducer’ are my faves so far on this disc.

3.Vampire Weekend-Vampire Weekend

This c.d. is so great and I’m so happy that I get to see them live at Pemberton. Although Vanessa can’t stop making fun of their name, I actually like how they’re all intelligent boys from Cambridge etc. It makes for some smart and catchy tunes.

4.Coconut Records-Nighttiming

I don’t think my life would be the same if Jen hadn’t told me about this c.d. Jason Schwartzman is a great actor but an even better artist and definitely the coolest in my books!

5.The Hives-Veni Vidi Vicious

I think I’m still so hooked on this disc because their concert was so kick ass. I keep blasting ‘Hate to Say I Told You So’ and the always classic ‘Main Offender’. This disc is also great for a drive on a sunny day!

My 5 Favorite Songs: (which happen to ALL be male artists…)

1. Ray Lamontagne-Be Here Now

Though Ray has some other songs that almost made the cut (like ‘Barfly’) this is just too special to even be compared to the others. The first time I heard this tune, I immediately got goosebumps from his smoothly haunting voice. This song was on my “If I ever made a movie soundtrack..” list and so, I was deeply saddened when it was played in the recent movie ’27 Dresses’. Bastards..

2. Damien Rice-Me, My Yoke, and I

Damien is another man with an incredibly haunting voice. This song is so powerful and when I’m in any sort of angry or frustrated mood, it compliments my feelings very well. Damien is another fellow who is an outrageous performer and puts on a mean concert. Though I like ‘O’ better than ‘9’ where this song came from, I am just too attached to this tune to try and pick an older song from ‘O’.

3. David Gray-Babylon

The whole ‘White Ladder’ c.d. brings me back to the summer/fall of 06 and this song in particular really spoke to me. “Friday night and I’m going nowhere, all the lights are changing green to red..”

4. Matthew Good-Blue Skies Over Bad LandsThis song has gotten me through such a tough time that it was necessary to add to the list. Matt has tons of other great songs, especially from ‘Avalanche’ but this song caters to an ultra depressed mood.5. Ryan Adams-The ShadowlandsAnother song from my “If I ever made a movie soundtrack..” list. The way it starts off so deeply sad and ends in an upbeat instrumental makes it a rare song that you can both cry and smile to. “God, please bring the rain…”My 5 “Artists of All Time” Picks:1.RYAN ADAMSAre you honestly surprised? The man makes such diverse music that at times I can’t even keep track. Sometimes he’s a little rock and roll, a lot of the time he’s country, and whenever it’s needed he’s passionately depressing. Exactly what I look for in a man…who’s music I love 😛2.COLDPLAYNot a shocking choice either considering this band’s popularity. Once again, with every c.d. they release I become more and more impressed. I’m eagerly awaiting Viva La Vida and quite enjoy what I’ve heard so far.3.RADIOHEADAnother classic choice, perhaps my list is pretty predictable. I’m going to have to research more of their old c.d.’s but ‘The Bends’ remains on my top 10 c.d.’s of all time list for sure. ‘In Rainbows’ was also magical and I’m of course really pumped to see them in August with Danielle, Chad, and Adam!4.JACK JOHNSONNot so much at this moment but Jack is always consistently great. I can play a song or two of Jack’s on the piano and my best friends and I were so obsessed with him in 12th grade that he will always be one of the best. ‘Brushfire Fairytales’ and ‘On and On’ will be in my music collection for the rest of my life.5.U2Now this is just getting hard. To narrow down all the c.d.s was hard enough, now I’m trying to pick only ONE more artist as a favorite. I had to play it safe and go timeless with U2. I’m positive they will continue to create fantastic music until they die, and even then I could see them pulling a Tupac and releasing an after-death disc that blows our minds!
