{beauty} from the runway

My latest beauty collab with Kahlia Adams happened to be right after all the New York, London, and Paris fashion week excitement.  Buzzing with ideas, we set out to recreate a combination of some of our favourite beauty trends, fresh off the runways.

Our first thought was BRAIDS BRAIDS BRAIDS of any kind, as seen at Viktor and Rolf.  Though I don’t know if I could re-create this exact braided style with my impossibly thick and bobby pin rejecting locks, Kahlia did a great job of putting it all back in record time.  She just did two long french braids, parted in the middle, and then twisted them around each other and pinned them into place.

Kahlia used Chanel Khol pencil in 61 and fluidline in blacktrack to create that Michael Kors-eque smokey cat eye.  She then applied Mac lipstick in Rebel with a fluffy brush for more of a stain look, followed by Nars velvet lip pencil in Train Bleu in the center of the mouth and then smudged it outwards for that unevenness.  We complimented the dramatic eyes and lips with some strong brows and  natural skin.

I loved how light and approachable this runway inspired look was.  It was perfect for a night out, and I’ve since been able to re-create it myself.

If you’re loving these beauty collabs, we’d love to hear what you’d like to see next!  Head on over to Kahlia’s Instagram or Facebook Page (or leave a comment below) with any questions or suggestions.  And if you’d like to book Kahlia Adams for an appointment of your own, you can do so here.

{beauty} 10 minute face: au naturel

May 10, 2013
photo (65)
Everyone is going au naturel with their faces this spring, and I am most definitely on board!  Kahlia and I did a 10 minute face that you can easily recreate with your own tools at home.

We began with Vinosource SOS Thirst Quenching Serum.  Apply morning and evening on your beautiful face and neck before you moisturize.  And then you MUST moisturize – I insist!  If there is one beauty tip I do know, it is that moisturising your face is très importante.  Kahlia likes Kiehl’s Acai Damage Correcting Moisturizer.  It’s 100% natural,  rich with antioxidants, and non-greasy.  Definitely sounds a lot better than the Oil Of Olay I normally use.

Time for a little BB Cream, like Dior Hydra Life.  It will even your skin tone out while moisturising and even has SPF 30.  We used Revlon’s Photoready Skinlights under my eyes and as a highlighter.  I don’t normally wear concealer, so we just used the Mac Pro-Conceal and Correct Palette for spot treatment and peachier tones under the eyes.  Then Kahlia applied Mac Mineralized Skin Finish to set powder under the eyes and on any visibly shiny spots.  For the brows, we brushed them and then used an angle brush and Mac Eyeshadow in Espresso to fill them in.

Keeping things more natural looking, we were very minimal on the eyes.  Just a shimmer base and then using an eyeshadow brush applied Mac Eyeshadow in Malt.  A simple black liner using Mac Dip Down Fluid Line and an angled liner brush only on the upper lid.  And lastly, mascara like Revlon‘s Lash Potion in Blackforest Black.  Since I’m naturally pink in the cheeks, we opted for Mac Warm Soul Mineral Blush which is almost like a bronzer and blush in one!  We finished off the look with Clarins #10 Lipstick.

It was definitely more skin product than I normally use, but the difference was VERY noticeable. A few different people comment on how “fresh” I looked that day, which isn’t a compliment I normally receive.  I love how easy this makeup routine was and I’ve been recreating a similar one each day at home.  Thanks to Kahlia for showing us how it’s done!

I am loving the fresh, natural look that rocked the red carpet this past award season.  Looking back, one of our favourite looks was that of Jessica Alba at The Golden Globes.  Her orangey-coral lip colour was paired beautifully with simple full brows and big lashes.  Kahlia recreated the look with NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square.  These NARS lip pencils are so perfect for spring, going to get my hands on a few shades on the asap.

Beauty How-To: Winged Eyeliner

January 11, 2013
step copy
I love wearing winged eyeliner.  I sometimes do a more subtle version for daytime, and a thick, dramatic wing for a night on the town!  The trouble, however, is that when friends ask how I get the look, I’m completely unable to explain it.  That’s why I was so curious to find out how makeup artist Kahlia Adams suggested we all achieve the perfect winged liner.
step1 copy
Start by drawing a guide with a white eye pencil, following the lower lash line.
step2 copy
Draw a line across the upper lid on the lash line and above the white pencil line, using an angle brush and some black eyeliner. Shadow is easier to remove and control
then a gel or liquid liner . You can make sure your proportions are correct
before using the less forgiving medium.
step3 copy
Then take a pen eyeliner (we used a Skinny Marker by NYX)
and start just outside the tear duct till the end of the lash line on both
sides. Flip the pen around so the skinniest part was at the tip of the
wing and follow the guideline. You can build the line up do its as thick and
dramatic as you want.
step4 copy
Use a wet Q-Tip to remove your white line, et voila!

As of last week, my hair was in a state of emergency.  The length was so out of control.  It was at the point where only the ends would curl, I constantly found nests of knots in the back, and I was wearing my hair up in a bun more often than anyone should.  And so, I called in for backup and saw Michael at TRiM for a fresh haircut.

Most people who see me just comment on the fact that my long hair is gone, but I LOVE this change.  It’s so much healthier, easier to manage, and perfect for our trip to Mexico next week.  My hair grows like a weed anyway, so in a month you won’t even be able to tell I cut it 😛

Did you do anything shocking (yes, this is classified as “shocking” in my world) with your hair this year?  How did yours turn out?

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics ‘Strumpet’ Lip Tar

December 19, 2012
STRUMPET LIP TAR

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics are 100% vegan and cruelty free which is very important to Kahlia and I.  These Lip Tars contain Hemp oil, peppermint oil and vitamin E so it conditions your lips as you wear it.  They are also heavily pigmented, so keep in mind that a little bit really goes a long way.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics ‘Strumpet’ Lip Tar can be found online or in Vancouver at Sephora for around $19 CAD.

DSC_2800NEW

EYES
Start by applying a champagne cream eyeshadow all over the lid. Then put a dot of the lip tar on the hand and sheer it out with a brush until you get the colour you’re looking for.  Then apply it to the crease of the eye.

DSC_2812NEW

CHEEKS
We mixed the colour with another medium to give it a bit of a pearly glow (we used Strobe Cream by MAC).  This sheers out the colour and should be applied to apples of the cheeks to give you a healthy flush.

DSC_2831NEW

LIPS
Apply the product with the little brush that is included with the lip tar.  Just use a little on your brush, if you use to much you might end up with the colour bleeding on your lip line!  Start at the centre of your mouth around your lip line and work your way to the sides, then fill in with the leftovers on your brush.

DSC_2838NEW
The finished product, using the OCC Strumpet Lip Tar as a base on the eyes, cheeks, and lips.  We were feeling extra sparkly, so we added some glitter on the eyes and a cute black heart on the cheek.  Kahlia is so amazing, I wish she could help me put my face on every day!

It’s amazing how quickly the fashion and beauty industries are always a season
or two ahead.  December has barely started and yet, last week we were invited
to preview some beautiful pastels from the Lise Watier spring collection.

Makeup artist Kahlia Adams, and I spent the evening ooh-ing and ahh-ing over
the new Lise Watier products.  My favourites include an incredibly smooth and
easy to apply black liner.  It goes on with a slightly glossier appearance than
a regular eyeliner and seems like the perfect marriage between pencil and
liquid liner.  What also got me excited was their nail lacquer.  You can almost see
in the above photo, that their adorable little polishes come with a built-in
light!  No more excuses for messy nails, with a little help from a mini flashlight,
you’ll finally be able to painting within the lines!

Not only was the Lise Watier collection a real treat for the eyes, but Kahlia
and I absolutely adored the interior decor and collection at Rebecca Bree!
Will definitely have to go back there to do some major credit card damage
next time I’m out in Kits.

A big thanks to Lise Watier for letting us preview the new collection.
I can’t wait to try out all the products!
