Beautiful Midnight

February 18, 2017

I clearly have ‘a look’ when it comes to recreating these 90’s trends.  Usually involves a lot of black and a touch of blush pink, because pastels and that decade just go hand in hand!   Unlike the last time I styled a similar ensemble, I actually “invested” in a choker necklace and am still trying to figure out how to navigate the style as an adult.

Thinking about it, I really should have worn this the other night!  Adam and I went to The Commodore to see Matthew Good perform his iconic album ‘Beautiful Midnight’ from start to finish.  It was SO much fun.  We partied like it was 1999 (and by partied, I mean we were completely sober but rocked out until midnight on a weeknight lol) and honestly had the best time.  There’s something really special about an artist performing an album, as is, that you’ve listened to and been obsessed with for such a long period of time.  It’s like when my brother and I went down to Seattle to see The Pixie’s perform Doolittle front to back.  You adore every single song and every person in the crowd knows all the words.  It’s like a giant nostalgic singalong with thousands of friends – how could you not love that?  If you’re in Vancouver and able to score tickets for tonight’s performance, you absolutely should!

The Dress Remix

February 14, 2017

how to re wear a holiday dress, alicia fashionista, canadian style blog, park and fifth dress, custom bridesmaid dresses vancouver

On this day last year, I did a Galentine’s in London with Alex and am feeling a bit sad that we’re not across the pond having tea and scones at Sketch or something equally as fabulous.  Life has changed a bit since, but my heart is even fuller this February 14th with little Reggie in our lives.  I also might have worked out the perfect Valentine’s Day plan in town.  Adam surprised me with coffee and a muffin this morning along with a cute little note.  Going for lunch with my cousin Melissa and having an afternoon adventure with her and baby Thomas, which hopefully includes treating myself to a bouquet of beautiful flowers.  Then, Adam’s plan for tonight is to go old school and cook me dinner.  And if I know him well, it’ll be Olivieri Tortellini in tomato sauce.

Originally, I’d planned to wear this remixed Park and Fifth dress tonight, but since we’re now staying in, I’ll have to rock this ensemble another time.  Love when I have outfits ready in my arsenal, makes future events so much easier.

Happy Valentine’s Day, darlings!  Hope your day is full of love and lots of chocolate xo

Best Winter Skirt (Under $50)

February 10, 2017

what to wear valentines, best winter skirt, asos review canada, vancouver style blog, canadian fashion bloggerOnline clothing shopping is this tricky business of getting the best price but also not waiting too long and having the item sell out.  I browse ASOS every few days because I’m obsessive like that, and had this black and gold skirt in my favourites folder for a couple months.  I finally went for it and am so happy I did, but of course, it’s now on SALE!  Isn’t that just always the way?!  Anyway, such a steal for under $50, it has an elastic waist and I love that it has sparkle but remains neutral.  It’s definitely been my go-to piece when I’ve wanted to elevate my everyday casual style!

This week has been kind of a weird one, since I decided that instead of quickly editing the VLOG footage from the last few weeks, I purchased and have been doing my best to navigate an entirely new video editing software.  Classic me.  It has been really fun to challenge myself to learn a new program though, and I know that in the long run it’s going to be beneficial.  The quality is leaps and bounds better, can’t wait to show you guys!  Thank you as well for all your support with last week’s video!  Looking forward to our regular blog and video posting schedule next week. Turtlenecks For Beginners

February 7, 2017

I’ve just never really been big into turtlenecks.  Figured that a chunky high neck wasn’t the most flattering silhouette on me and just never really questioned it.  That was, until Joe Fresh sent over this simple, off white turtleneck before the holidays.  The looser fit and longer length made it comfortable enough to give it a try and hey, I was kind of wrong about them.  Turns out, styles have changed since I last wore a turtleneck in 2002!  I found some Pinspo and tried layering a fall jacket over top.  The fitted moto style of this suede jacket cuts into that one note turtleneck fit that normally feels like a blah tubular shape.  Loved staying in this sweet pastel colour scheme too.  Could definitely repurpose this for Valentine’s Day.  Or Aspen.  I feel like this would go over well aprés ski, in a place where the beer flows like wine.

Embroidered Jacket

January 30, 2017

embroidered leather jacket, embroidered jacket, forever 21 jacket, alicia fashionista, spring 2017 trends, canadian lifestyle blogI’ve noticed that in the past year, my closet has slowly but surely been collecting lots of ruffles, pompoms, peplum, and embroidery.  It’s all a bit of that Spanish influence and I seriously cannot get enough!  Everything is so feminine and lovely.  I fell for this jacket online at Forever 21 and before I knew it, I was purchasing everything in my cart (because of course there was more than just one item in my shopping cart)!  The embroidered flowers are so beautiful and definitely make me feel optimistic for those spring blooms.  Was nervous about ordering a faux leather jacket online, but the moto fit is very flattering and it was true to size.  Can’t wait for warmer days, I have so many styling ideas for this floral jacket!

4 Ways To Look More Pulled Together

January 24, 2017

Sometimes, I’m really on top of my outfit planning.  When the mood strikes, I’ll retreat to the bedroom, style up assorted pieces from my closet, dance around to some fun tunes, and snap photos of the looks for future reference.  Those are usually the ensembles that I’m extra excited to wear, often with specific occasions in mind.  On an ongoing basis though, this is not the norm.  There are countless mornings that consist of just staring at my closet, half asleep, thinking what the heck am I going to wear today?

Depends on my mood, of course, but this is also usually when I don’t want to put much thought into things.  I just want to throw on something comfortable that still makes me feel relatively put together.    This happened just the other day and this outfit is what I threw on.  It’s nothing ground breaking, but I realized that there are a few key tricks to appearing slightly more polished – even if you’re really not!

The Long Cardigan

January 17, 2017

alicia fashionista. how to style a long cardigan, vancouver fashion blog, canadian lifestyle blog

Truthfully, I never let the long cardigan live up to its full potential.  Within my wardrobe, I’ll admit, that I felt a little stuck in regards to styling this particular piece.  It’s not as though the word ‘cardigan’ ignites excitement.  A long, duster length on a cardigan – now that’s fun!  I consulted with my “personal stylist” (it’s just Pinterest you guys, the best outfit inspiration), and saw a similar combination to this.  When I realized that I had all of the items to make it happen, I was also pleasantly surprised that it worked on me!

I’d never really given the long cardigan a fair chance, but it really is such a versatile piece.  That long line is incredibly flattering and I really liked layering it over a button up.  Pairing it with a Canadian tuxedo AND with a faux leather pencil skirt, I’d say that the duster cardi has earned a top spot.  I’ll be doing a winter capsule wardrobe, and I have a feeling this one will definitely be a part of that!

5 Winter Staples You’ll Wear With Everything

January 13, 2017

5 winter stapes, what to invest in winter 2017, alicia fashionista, canadian lifestyle blog, vancouver fashion blogger

This exact outfit is essentially what I wore for a week straight over the holiday break.  Mixing the old with the new and staying relatively neutral, I loved the ease and comfort of these pieces together.  Looking at this simple, casual ensemble, I realized that the reason it worked so well, is because it’s all the winter classics together.  Veering away from all black, it’s all about adding a hint of winter white (it’s actually a creamy blush, but let’s not get too picky), a slight pattern, and a bold pop of colour!

I hunted all last season for the perfect knit sweater and was so happy to have found this one from ASOS – for under $50 too!  It’s the EXACT length I’d been hunting for, a slight crop but enough to cover everything up comfortably.  I’ve already worn this sweater way too much, it is my favourite winter purchase so far!

Everyday Simplicity

January 10, 2017

alicia fashionista, vancouver fashion blog, canadian style blog, curvy winter style

Last year, my new year’s goals and intentions were quite different than anything I’d set to accomplish in the past.  You see, I used to make cliché empty promises to lose weight!  Take better care of myself!  Stop being late for things!  Save money! And not surprisingly, without any sort of action plan, things never worked out for me.  At the end of each year, I’d be 5 lbs heavier, still late for everything, have an apartment full of unorganized papers/crippling clutter, and be in even more debt.  Then, I’d feel bad about myself for not changing any of these things and carry over the resolutions into the next year.  It was a vicious cycle that lasted for pretty much all of my twenties.

In November of 2015, I’d hit a wall.  I had finally pushed myself to a place where change wasn’t a question, it was a necessity.  Burnt out completely, the weight of all these ignored promises compounded into the need for me to go back to the basics.  My goal for 2016 was to completely reinvent myself, to strip my life down to the fundamentals and build it back up.  Which compared to what I used to say each January, seemed like a very tall order.  It took the entire year (and is always a work in progress), but you guys…I did it!
